Experience Marimba Moods by David Harvey

David Harvey’s Marimba Seminars

My marimba seminars include three events in a single day

all performed, taught and presented by david harvey:

• A marimba concert performance

• A marimba masterclass

• A marimba history clinic presentation

In my marimba masterclass, I clearly explain the physics

of rosewood bar design and vibration;

how various mallets produce different tones; the difference between short and long marimba strokes; using a palette of grip and stroke techniques to maximize your marimba tone, projection, and articulation; and how to apply all these factors in various repertoire situations. Students and professionals alike will increase their “rosewood fluency” and become better sounding marimbists.

My marimba history clinic is a fun presentation using a constant audio-video stream of videos, recordings, photographs, interviews, sheet music, and more.

We will explore the indigenous beginnings of the marimba; the dawn of the industrialized marimba in the 1910s-1920s; and the first generation of modern marimbists up to today’s 5-octave keyboard. Percussionists have enjoyed this event at colleges such as the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, as well as PASIC, and the first ever scholarly presentation made at the Center for Mallet Percussion Research at Kutztown University.

My marimba concerts feature entirely repertoire that I have transcribed over many years, which you will not hear anywhere else in the world.

Styles include classical, popular, jazz, and ragtime. A mix of Bach, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Beiderbecke, Ellington, Norvo, Green, and others combine to create a vibrant marimba happening. Sheet music of my marimba repertoire is available directly through this site.
